A fascinating account of various American prisoners during the American Revolution. From the preface The writer of this book has been interested for many years in the subject of the sufferings of the American prisoners of the Revolution. Finding the information she sought widely scattered, she has, for her own use, and for that of all students of the subject, gathered all the facts she could obtain within the covers of this volume. There is little that is original in the compilation. The reader will find that extensive use has been made of such narratives as that Captain Dring has left us. The accounts could have been given in the compiler's own words, but they would only, thereby, have lost in strength. The original narratives are all out of print, very scarce and hard to obtain, and the writer feels justified in reprinting them in this collection, for the sake of the general reader interested in the subject, and not able to search for himself through the mass of original material, some of which she has only discovered after months of research. Her work has mainly consisted in abridging these records, collected from so many different sources.

The one thing you never want to see ever is the name of a family member on a list of 8,000 people (out of perhaps 11,000 be some estimates, and 17,000 by others) who were left to die on one of the prison ships. The one thing that leaves you with hope is finding the name of a family member whom you know survived. Supply Clap did not survive. I'm still looking for even one family survivor. Every now and again, I go through the list, finding more family names, but without the courage to verify who are family, and who lived to go home.

The recollections of survivors are heartbreaking, very difficult to read, and harder to write about. When you know your family was there, it's even worse. American prisoners were not considered POW's, but traitors, and were treated accordingly. It is tragic that so many Americans don't know about the prison ships, and are in disbelief when I tell them. They need to know!!!

The one thing I wish it had (maybe it's there, but I didn't see it) is a breakdown of the numbers prisoners by year to show that the war was far from over for the men on those ships. So many people think the war ended in Virginia, unaware of more prisoners died in Wallabout Bay (the Brooklyn Navy Yard) after Yorktown (I think this is correct - sorry if it isn't) than during the entire war. If you ever in Brooklyn, NY, go to Ft Green Park and visit the memorial to these martyrs (and they were martyrs).

Good Research book.
very interesting and disturbing read about a topic seldom heard about.I've read a lot about POWsin the Civil War, but I've never really heard about war prisoners in the revolution. Guess some things don't change
Family historians seeking answers may discover an ancestor mentioned in the grim narrative and diary excerpts. Of the 11,000 listed prisoners very few survived, it's rather personal when you recognize a family name.
A very interesting book. I cannot believe the treatment of American prisoners. I also cannot believe I didn't learn any of this in school. I definitely recommend this book
Some of the book was hard to read because of the wrongs committed against the subjects of the book. The attitude of the British toward the Americans indeed fueled the Revolution.
This is a most impressive work
From an historical view point and genealogical
It gave me an insight into an aspect of the Revolutionary War that I hadn't previously considered.
I am aware that the British were and are known for their cruelty in punishing their prisoners; but, I had no idea that they would treat their own country men with such cruelty.

I have read a lot about the American Revolution era and most books and articles cover the main names and key battles. LAtely some have come out that dealt with the Tories and Revolutionaries as separate from the big names. This book details life from the viewpoint pf prisoners and offers a really fascinating bit of insight and information. We hear it from their own recounts and not just what an authors infers into their treatment or views
